I Have A Dream
Many people dream about starting their own online business. Perhaps they want to leave a job they don’t like, are struggling to pay their bills or simply want more freedom than they have now. Whilst many of us dream about this, far fewer actually take action and start to build their own business. So why do we find it so hard to get started?
While everyone will have their own specific reasons I thought I would share in this short post the two biggest things that have held me back in my online endeavours.
I like work. It fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.
My biggest challenge is procrastination. I discussed this recently with a friend and they were most surprised that I would say this as they saw me as someone who was very organised and always met targets. I wonder sometimes whether when I say procrastination I might actually mean laziness – sometimes it’s hard to have the motivation to work hard at something that seems like it will take a long time to provide any reward. I guess procrastination sounds better!

Shiny Object Syndrome is a challenge many people considering starting their own online business suffer from. The symptoms of Shiny Object Syndrome consist of a constant desire to try a new approach or niche and includes the regular purchase of courses, PLR material and monthly memberships. How many of us have PLR sitting on our laptop that is used. You may even have monthly memberships that you haven’t logged into for months. One or more of these categories might fit me…!
A Solution – Focus On One Thing For A Specific Period
So what can someone wanting to start their own online business do about this? Well something that has worked for me in the past is to take part in “challenges” that encourage you to focus for a period on one particular approach or tactic. What has worked well for me has been blogging challenges. Usually these either focus on one theme or else require blogging to a regular schedule. Focusing on one theme helps me with the Shiny Object Syndrome and having to meet a specific blogging schedule helps with procrastination.
I am sure you will be able to find similar types of challenges that will help you with whatever is holding you back from starting your own online business.
