Know Your Audience
Yesterday I wrote about how important it is to know your audience and understand more about the individuals that tune into your radio shows. If you missed that post then you can catch up here.
Delving Deeper
Today I want to explore one way that you can gain further insight into your audience, their needs and wishes, and how you can use this information to improve your shows.
Exploring Social Media Profiles
Let’s start by learning more about those listeners who interact with you on social media. Make a list of all the Twitter and Facebook interactions you had before, during, or after, your last show. Include everyone who Favourited or Re-Tweeted one of your Tweets or Liked a Facebook post.
Now read the profiles of each person you have identified. Follow links to their personal websites, read their other recent Tweets and Facebook posts. Read their Facebook profiles. See who else they Follow, Favourite Re-Tweet or Like.
I think you get the idea!
What You Can Learn
Conducting this kind of research into members of your audience can help you understand what music they like, perhaps who their favourite artist is, what events they are attending, which other radio stations they listen to and much more.
You might also find some more personal information such as life events, likes and dislikes, other topics they post about, how influential they are within their own communities and even what they are saying about other DJs or radio stations.
Using This Information
There are many ways you might be able to take advantage of the data you have obtained and the new understanding of some of your audience members. Perhaps you might seek out music by their favourite artists and include it in your playlist. You might send them a tweet on their birthday or ask them how they enjoyed a particular event.
I am sure you can think of many other uses for this new knowledge. Why not leave me a comment below. If you do I will give you a credit on a future follow-up post.
